Rainmac is a small family firm; we design and build every playhouse by hand. That is myself Raie Macdonnell and my husband Colin, who is assigned the job of building our cartwheels as well as our playhouses, my task is the painting and the choice of colours and fabrics and we both play our part in design.
It has taken us three years to iron out the wrinkles and solve problems we didn't know we had at the beginning of our venture. Not least of these was our cartwheels for which we sourced an American book to enable us to set up jigs allowing all the individual parts of the cartwheel to be perfectly cut for precise construction. Once banded with steel rims and hub ferrules the wheels are painted a bright livery of colours.
Although our playhouses don't have a turning axle, the cartwheels are fully functional for mobility. The addition of a turning axle would have raised the height of the caravan considerably posing a hazard to children for which they are primarily made, although we know they do make a great summerhouse or small office.
